Information about DUBLIN
Dublin lies on the east coast of Ireland. The city is split by the river Liffey; the north has traditionally been poorer and the south wealthier. North of the river, the most important streets for visitors are O'Connell St, the major shopping thoroughfare that leads to Parnell Square, and Gardiner St, a B&B and hostel hotspot. Immediately south of the river is the hub of Dublin, Temple Bar, where you'll find a concentration of pubs, restaurants, shops and a number of art galleries. Nearby Trinity College is at the southern end of Grafton St, the city's most exclusive shopping street. On the south side you'll also find the best examples of Georgian Dublin, with stately houses and elegant parks.
As is the vast beauty of its emerald countryside, the literature of Ireland also is loved and admired; traditional Irish folk music contains the unique visceral elements that have inspired contemporary rhythm and blues, and most of this extraordinary talent was born in and around Dublin.
Riding on the back of the roaring success of the ‘Celtic Tiger’ economy, Dublin in the new millennium is a city on the rise and rise. Key industries include electronics, teleservices, retail and tourism. But things have not always been so rosy for this thousand-year-old city on the East coast of Ireland. For much of the first half of the 20th century, strife and unrest tore Dublin apart as it was involved in a messy and violent divorce from Britain. Despite ongoing attempts to find a lasting peace settlement, the religious and political troubles further north still dominate Irish politics.
However, prices have increased dramatically and, although long-term unemployment figures have steadily decreased in recent years, the capital is struggling to come to terms with the recent influx of immigrants.
